A few years back. I answered an ad on the Radio 3 website, from the conceptual art company, Blast Theory. They were creating a voice-collage for a half hour programme , `Soft Message.` My `contribution` was to be phoned randomly by one of the company, during one week. Brief extracts of my voice would, I was told,  feature among many other voices. The novel grew out of this...

So I was called once or twice a day for 3 days and chatted to someone called Matt Adams, who had a nice voice. Nothing too significant going on, I thought. But something happened. Day 4. It was six in the evening. He hadn`t called! To my astonishment I found myself pacing the floor, saying to myself `Where on earth is he? Why doesn`t he phone.` Yet I had no idea what he was like, what I really wanted to say to him, or whether, if I did get around to saying anything of significance, it would be heard in the final programme. A sense of curiosity about (yes, weird!) - inner worlds, human needs, took over. The idea for my novel was born.

Currently having some very interesting conversations about it.

Special Care was shortlisted by Crocus Publishers. In the same year an agent in London offered to take it on, provided I added a hundred pages to the terse story. I decided not to do this, and returned to writing plays. Special Care is about a premature baby born at 28 weeks, lucky to survive - and the mess surrounding her life, not to mention the life of her social worker.

I wrote By the Other Ruth, an autobiographical novel,  over 5 years, in between writing plays and productions of plays. I completed it at 95,000 words. After scarcely submitting it, I decided to hold onto it. My intention is to review it, cut it, colour it more deeply.  It awaits my attention.
